According to Merriam Webster, the word epic means to extend beyond the usual or ordinary, especially in size or scope. When I saw the title EpiC Specialist at Personify, I was intrigued.

Personify’s EPiC Program

What goes in to becoming an EPiC Specialist, which stands for someone who has Exceptional Potential early In their Career? The EPiC Program a year-long rotational program at Personify with rotations in three departments, with four months spent in each one. EPiC Specialists develop new skillsets in each department and become crucial members of the team throughout each rotation.

As a member of Personify’s inaugural EPiC class, I can share that I have learned so much over the past months of being an Epic Specialist, not just about who I was professionally but as a coworker, employee and mentee.

My EPiC Rotations

I started my rotation in Human Resources, learning the ins and outs of a company and understanding what it takes to create a strong corporate culture and environment within a company. My first rotation helped me understand how to interview candidates for jobs, recruiting best practices and how to create a team of happy employees at Personify. I am convinced that everyone should work in HR at some point in their life to understand just how impactful they are to driving the company’s culture and that they are the foundation for the organization’s success.

My next two rotations had me join the marketing team, initially in Brand and Communications and then in Demand Generation. My daily activities include managing social media, creating content and learning the ins and out of the tactics and execution of a marketing campaign. As part of the marketing team, I learned how much work and persistence goes into the daily upkeep of a corporate brand. I was given countless opportunities for new experiences that I never thought I would be doing. From planning our annual Sales Kick Off meeting, planning and attending PersoniFest, our annual user conference, and helping create content for social media–I had multiple experiences that helped me grow.

I was faced with challenges and tasks that helped me grow in my career. Throughout the rotations, I interacted with departments across the organization where I need to hone my project management skills and develop close relationships with new teammates. I didn’t just learn about Human Resources and Marketing, I learned life skills that I will take with me wherever I go. While I developed tangible career skills, I learned a lot about myself as well—including how I best work with others, meeting deadlines under pressure and managing my daily tasks.

Reflecting on my Experience

As a recent college grad, job hunting was a daunting task that sometimes seemed impossible and, without truly knowing what I wanted to do, I was afraid that my job search would be an uphill battle. Then I found the EPiC Program. This program is perfect for someone who isn’t quite sure what they want to do but are looking for exposure to multiple teams and projects.

As I am closing this chapter as an EPiC specialist, I am reflecting back on how many opportunities I had to learn and grow in this program. I discovered what I really enjoy doing and the environments that help me thrive and grow. The EPiC program allowed me and my colleagues to better understand how different departments and teams come together to build a successful organization.

I was able to take the skills I already had and further develop them. I would encourage any  growing organization to create a program like this one that helps young professionals try on different career opportunities and expand their areas of expertise. I feel as if I can take on the world now because of my experience and opportunities as an EPiC Specialist here at Personify.

Innovation driven by Personify’s research on young members is designed to optimize event engagement for membership and marketing professionals

June 6, 2019 – Personify, Inc. (“Personify”), the market-leading provider of technology solutions for associations and nonprofit organizationsintroduced a number of new features and capabilities to its platform at the 2019 ASAE Marketing Membership and Communications Conference. The new features and capabilities are designed to help membership and marketing professionals streamline tasks, deepen engagement and simplify the measurement, tracking and sharing of results with organization leaders.

According to Personify’s research on young members, in-person interactions remain critical across all stages of a member’s journey with their membership organization, with two in five individuals reporting they were recruited at an event and 91 percent of existing members reporting events were a valuable part of their experience.

While valuable, facilitating in-person interaction can prove challenging for resource-constrained membership, marketing and communication professionals. To facilitate organization and execution of events, Personify is introducing a number of enhancements across multiple products to address the needs of membership and marketing professionals around events large and small.

Streamline Tasks

  • Enhancements to Floorplan User Interface: The updated floorplan management tools within Personify’s A2Z Events solution enables show organizers to make the most of annual conferences and association events, with features to optimize layout, booth assignment, pavilions, moves, upgrades, downgrades and cancellations through a single, intuitive interface that saves valuable staff time and improves the exhibitor experience.
  • Meeting Administration: While large scale events deliver tremendous value for organizations, meetings provide another high-impact opportunity for members to interact with an organization and with one another. Membership and marketing professionals will now enjoy the full meeting set-up, including an easy-to-use, drag-and-drop session scheduler within the Personify360 SaaS solution.

Enhance Engagement

  • Bring New Life to In-Person Events – Online: Enhancements to the Personify Community product streamline sharing of important user-generated content, including photo galleries, and make it easy for communications professionals to get the word out about upcoming events.
  • Create a Dialogue: For marketers looking to keep a pulse on what their members are thinking – before or after an event, updated questionnaire functionality available in the latest release of Personify360 makes it easy to gather feedback on what matters most from members on an ongoing basis.
  • Keep the Connection Strong: Personify Community’s Content Quickviews allow users to peek at upcoming events, forum posts, and other members, giving them the ability to easily find and engage with the content that matters most.

Simplify Measurement, Tracking and Sharing of Results

  • Personalized Dashboards: Additional updates to Personify360’s browser-based client is also making it easier to understand what’s working, with events and beyond. Personify’s new personalized dashboards provide membership, marketing and communication staff with one-click access to metrics including the ability to organize the data in the way that’s most meaningful through an intuitive, drag-and-drop interface.

“Member interactions, whether in-person or virtual, play an integral role in fostering engagement and providing member value and having the right technology in place to support is critical to an association’s success,” said Teresa Zimmerman, Vice President of Marketing at Personify. “We are consistently innovating to meet the evolving needs of members and enabling organizations to streamline, enhance and simplify member engagement through events and beyond.”

In addition to the product updates, Personify will share best practices for member engagement with two presentations during the conferenceAmanda Myers, Director of Product Growth, will present “Character Study: Bringing Member Personas to Life – Hollywood Style!” on Thursday, June 6 from 3:30 – 4:15 PM in room 151 AB of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Teresa Zimmerman, Vice President of Marketingwill present “How to Capture the Attention of the Generation Z Constituent,” on Friday, June 7 from 2:45 – 3:30 PM in room 145 AB in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Membership and marketing professionals can explore Personify’s new capabilities from June 6 – 7 at Personify’s booth #121 during the 2019 ASAE Marketing Membership and Communications Conference.

Marketing, membership, communications – oh my!

As someone who has worked in marketing and membership longer than I’ll ever admit publicly, ASAE’s Marketing, Membership & Communications Conference, kicking off later this week in Washington D.C.’s Walter E. Washington Convention Center is among my favorite events of the year.

In addition to having the opportunity to connect with association professionals the topics discussed are always top-notch. Each session is uniquely targeted to address the needs of marketing, membership and communications professionals as they look to optimize their efforts across the various stages of the membership lifecycle, from acquisition to retention.

There are no shortage of amazing opportunities for learning but here are the five sessions I’m looking forward to the most this year:

Thursday, June 6th:

Viral Business Starts at Home

9:00AM – 10:00AM

We know both from our research into young members and anecdotal feedback from clients that few things are as effective in building buzz and in the acquisition of new members than word-of-mouth endorsements from peers. In his keynote, entrepreneur Johnny Cupcakes will share what he learned from the launch and success of his own business but also the implications for associations who need to ensure their staff will engage with their brand on a deep-level for an exceptional member experience.

How Issue Advocacy Can Increase Member Engagement

2:45PM – 3:15PM

We’ve seen in our own Personify Community how advocacy can only drive an organization’s mission forward by mobilizing members in support of a specific cause but also serve as an important opportunity for engagement. I’m looking forward this session, which will dive into issue advocacy and how associations can leverage social media and digital tools to further the reach of their advocacy campaigns and engage members.

Bringing Member Personas to Life – Hollywood Style

3:30PM – 4:15PM

What kind of marketing person would I be if I didn’t use this opportunity to plug my own session? Personas have become a critical component in the success of marketing teams, but often they’re authored in response to a single situation or in the context of a specific need. How can we take our understanding of personas to the next level and given them new life? I’ll be taking a trip to the TV stages, writer’s rooms and Hollywood studios for this exciting session. You don’t want to miss it!

Friday, June 7th

Making a Splash With an Integrated Campaign

10:15AM – 11:00AM

At Personify, we’re big fans of the integrated campaign. This session will share a real-world example of how one organization leveraged an integrated campaign to stand out among brands with flashy booths and global name recognition to make themselves not only relevant, but cool!

How to Capture the Attention of the Generation Z Constituent

2:45PM – 3:30PM

Another Personify-led workshop that you don’t want to miss! Our young member research looked not only at Millennials but also the emerging Gen Z audience. While Gen Z may bring new energy, ideas, and opportunities, they also bring the NOW Effect: information must be mobile, transparent, and delivered in real-time. Personify’s VP of Marketing, Teresa Zimmerman will dive into the art and science behind creating compelling campaigns that resonate with Gen Z. With a focus on content, social media, analytics, and more, we’ll share the necessity of using the right and left side of your brain when marketing to younger generations.

We look forward to seeing you in our sessions and on the show floor! If you’re attending ASAE MMCC please stop by booth 121 on the show floor. We’d love to hear what you’re learning and what’s resonating!

I am excited to be headed to the 38th annual NAYDO (North American YMCA Development Organization) Conference in Indianapolis this week to meet with YMCA colleagues from across the country to expand my network and meet some new folks.

At Personify, we’ve been attending NAYDO for the last several years and are pleased to be sponsoring the opening reception. If you’re attending NAYDO, please stop by and visit with the Personify team at booth #43-44.

Looking at the conference agenda, there are many different opportunities to gain knowledge and best practices. Here are some of the sessions that I’m most looking forward to attending:

Building a Culture of Philanthropy

Thursday, 2:45-5:45 PM

A culture of philanthropy is essential in any organization to effectively raise funds but what does that mean and how do you intentionally create such a culture? Mary Kaufman-Cranney, CFRE from The Alford Group/YMCA Alumni will share her journey in taking an organization through a process to create a common language and implement a curriculum to create a measurable difference.

She will engage participants in exercises and collaborative work to discuss key components of a culture of philanthropy and the ideas to make them real so that everyone in your Y appreciates donors as partners who share its goals and participate in achieving them.

Hack the Mind: Using Psychology to Boost Fundraising

Friday, 8:45-10:00 AM

In this session, Andrew Buck from Mighty Citizen will share how the mind is a trickster. It leads us wherever it pleases—while we remain mostly unaware of its true motivations. But thanks to advances in psychology, fundraisers can more effectively make the brain’s habits work for them.

In this interactive workshop, Andrew will explore our minds’ most surprising tendencies, biases and shortcuts. He will do a deep dive into how to employ the brain’s habits to grow

an organization’s donor base and fundraising. Participants will leave with a new understanding of the subtle, predictable, and (often) irrational ways donors think. And they will have concrete ways to apply these great “brain hacks” to their organization.

How to Recruit, Retain & Inspire the Next Generation of Board Members- Building the Pipeline of Board Leaders

Friday, 10:15-11:30 AM

Young board members have energy and networks the Y is not tapping into currently and often the Y may miss an opportunity to fully engage the young generation on its boards. This workshop will explore what the board experience is like for those who are under 40 years of age.

Participants will learn how to do stellar onboarding for new young board members and rock their first-year board experience. Hear about tools and resources for recruiting and retaining young board members from three NAYDO Young VIPs.

 Strategic Excitement Fundraising Plan: 2019

Friday, 3:30-4:45 PM

In a comprehensive expansion of the 2018 NAYDO workshop of the same name, participants will be led through the exciting process of actually planning a five-year fundraising plan for a hypothetical Y. The plan will include annual, capital and endowment components.

Using electronic voting transponders, attendees will participate in developing a five-year fundraising plan for a typical YMCA by voting on goals, priorities and strategic direction. This session is a great way to learn more about what the Y’s plans are and how we can help get to know them better.

I’ve always felt that conferences are a magical thing. Whether attending for work or play, a conference serves as that once-a-year chance to connect with industry professionals and discuss the latest topics and trends.

PersoniFest is no different. Whether it is your first or your 20th PersoniFest, I have put a list of tips to help make this a magical experience and maximize your time at the conference:

1. Set Goals

With 50+ breakout sessions, plus general sessions, networking events and more, one can easily feel overwhelmed. Set a few goals for yourself around sessions you’d like to attend, people you’d like to meet or new functionalities you’d like to learn about.

2. Plan Your Agenda

Whether using the mobile app or the agenda at-a-glance, plan out all networking and content sessions you’d like to attend. It will make to conference easier to digest and allows you to know which sessions are most important to you.

If you’re planning to earn CAE, CPE or CEM credits, take a look at the agenda at-a-glance to see which sessions will help you earn credits. We’ll also have worksheets available at the registration desk to help you track your credits throughout the conference.

3. Network like a Boss

Networking and social events can be overwhelming, especially if you’re attending on your own. Networking helps foster collaboration and it can help you make friends.

One of my favorite tips for attending a conference is to never sit with the same group twice. Take the opportunity to meet new people and grow your network. You never know who will help spark inspiration or develop new ideas over lunch or during happy hour.

4. Speak to the Speakers

Speakers are some of the best reasons to attend a conference. And, they are the best way to get connected. Take a moment to visit with the speakers after the sessions. They know the products and the people you should meet to learn more. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and find out more about their background and expertise.

5. Dress for Success

We’ve received a few questions about recommended attire for the conference. We recommend business attire for the event, but you may want to bring some casual options for evening events. Also, comfy shoes are a must. You’re going to be walking a decent amount each day at the conference, and Savannah is a beautiful city to explore.

Finally, we encourage all attendees to break out their best 90s attire for the Conference Party on Tuesday night. Given that we’re celebrating 20 years of PersoniFest, we’re going to party like it’s 1999—the year that our first conference began.

I’m pleased as punch to be headed to the 2019 Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC) Conference in Portland this week that is hosted by the team at NTEN. I’ll be there with 2,000 nonprofit professionals to learn about collaborating, innovating and discovering new ways to spark change with technology.

I’m excited because this is my first NTC Conference and only my second visit to Portland. If you will also be in attendance at this conference, please stop by and visit the Personify team at booth #725.

Here are some of the sessions that I’m most looking forward to attending:

Put a Cat Gif on It: Linking Storytelling and Social to Donations

Wednesday, 3:15-4:30 PM

Yes, that’s the actual session title. In this session, Ann Nguyen will look at how Lung Cancer Foundation of America went from an April Fool’s idea, #CatsAgainstLungCancer, to a digital engagement campaign with clear and measurable results to show for it.

Participants will learn how to identify concrete actions for users to take in a campaign and how those align with key performance indicators of moving their mission forward. Nguyen will also look beyond April 1 to see how the unexpected bright spots of LCFA’s website can still drive meaningful action — and help lung cancer research.

The Future of Work: Looking Through Nonprofit Tech Lenses

Thursday, 10:30-11:45 AM

In this session, Katherine Lagana, Rachel Paris and Arjun Reddy will explore how the future of work trends will impact nonprofit internal tech operations and the digital expression of each mission. When considering the evolution of Digital Ethics & Privacy, the Gig Economy and Augmented Analytics – how might these change the speed and method by which board pitches occur or the means by which donors are engaged? With this session, the speakers will don three trendy sets of specs – some with the bifocal of speed to explore the future of work.

Dirty Data? Clean It Up.

Thursday, 3-4:15 PM

Shameless plug: My colleague Maggie Cameron, Director of Enterprise Products at Personify, and our client Michael Fiaschetti, Senior Director of System Integration & Business Intelligence/IT at the Alzheimer’s Association, will share how poor data hygiene can have a massive impact on every aspect of your organization.

These impacts range from not being able to accurately report on your donors and advocates, to missing the chance to connect with them in an efficient and effective way. Join Maggie and Michael to discuss the challenges that bad data creates and how you can use tools and best practices to overcome them in your organization.

Storytelling for Impact: Helping Donors Understand the Value of Their Dollar

Friday, 10:30-11:45 AM

In this session, Andrew Buck and Becca Montjoy will share that if you want your donors to give more than once, you have to turn them into investors in—and not merely supporters of—your mission. Donors want to feel the impact of their gift. They want to see the concrete outcomes of their dollars. And they crave evidence that your organization is using their gift to make the world a better, fairer, safer, and happier place.

Storytelling compels your donors to stay engaged—and to donate again. Learn how to tell a story that cuts through the noise, and to transform data into real, specific, human stories.

A few years ago, I was training for the NYC marathon during the summer and decided to partner with my local chapter of Girls on the Run, a non-profit organization that inspires pre-teen girls to take charge of their lives and define the future on their terms. These young women gain confidence and embrace healthy lifestyles through dynamic, interactive lessons and running activities—all of which culminates in a celebratory 5k run.

Each mile and each week- we sweat, we ached, we complained, we cheered, we celebrated and we embraced the journey and ambition that brought us closer to our goals. It was a powerful experience in watching these young women set and achieve their goals, and it’s one that stays with me today.

International Women’s Day

On March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day, a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions. Strengthened by the United Nations, the commemoration is a rallying point to build support for women’s rights and participation in our global, local, professional and personal arenas.

In many ways, women are increasingly recognized for the work that they do and we’re seeing more women represented in government, executive roles,

leading feature films and more—but we still have a long way to go. Worldwide, more than 60 million girls of primary and secondary school age are not in school. For girls in developing countries, getting an education is the key to a brighter future.

We are lucky at Personify to work with organizations like Girl Up, an organization founded by the United Nations Foundation to empower young women leaders and start a movement for social change. To date, Girl Up has 3,000 Girl Up Clubs in more than 100 countries and has trained 48,000 girls to create tangible change around the world. It has been amazing to see the impact that results from creating and fostering a community of inclusion for young women.

Opportunities for Women

Equal education is the foundation that drives opportunities. And by now, most non-profit and for-profit organizations understand the benefits that come from building a diverse team. Diversity of thought is the ultimate remedy to groupthink and it has been demonstrated time and time again that organizations with diverse leaders achieve higher results, greater client focus and greater innovation.

So why is it that of the top 500 companies by revenues, only 24 are headed by women? When we look at the tech sector, the numbers are even worse. While women held 57 percent of all professional occupations in 2015, they held only 25 percent of all tech occupations. And, they were more than twice as likely (41 percent) to leave the industry than men were (17 percent).

It’s important that organizations across all sectors, but especially ones in the tech industry, have honest and open conversations about why women are underrepresented in their company and why women are leaving our industry at such high rates.

Creating a Culture of Inclusion

At Personify, we’ve built a very close-knit team of people who are like family. In fact, we call it the PersoniFam. It’s incredibly powerful, as we recognize that together, we can accomplish more ground towards our mission. I’m proud to be part of an organization that has women represented in leadership roles across the organization and it’s important to me that we continue to build a diverse workforce.

I was fortunate to have mentors early in my career that taught me to lead by example, to model inclusive behavior and live the commitment. Leaders should be thoughtful and deliberate in ensuring they have voices in the room that come from different backgrounds and provide unique perspectives. This starts with treating gender diversity like the business priority it is, from setting targets to holding leaders accountable for results. It requires closing gender gaps in hiring and having frank discussions about how we get to where we want to be.

Providing Opportunities for Young Professionals

An example of how we’re doing this at Personify is the launch of our EPiC rotational program, which stands for exceptional potential early in career. This program enables young professionals to gain valuable skills and experience in different parts of the business. Our EPiC Specialists are able to “try on” different career paths, whether they are in marketing, product, sales operations and more.

We’ve taken a holistic approach to this program and hold books clubs, cross-functional sharing and lunch and learns to provide additional exposure for these young professionals and help them grow in their careers. I recently led a book with our EPiC team for Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg. It was an opportunity for me to not only share insights from a strong woman that I admire and respect but also enable our EPiC team members, both men and women, to gain a better understanding of inequities that exist in the workplace and help shape and frame the discussion of inclusion.

I’m excited about the future of these young professionals and this program, and it is one of the things that differentiates Personify (and helped make us a Best Place to Work!) If you’re interested in joining us, check out our career opportunities and come help us change the world.

The road to gender equality is not paved and progress does not always move in a straight line. But we are not alone. There are many who came before us and helped pave this path, and there will be many that come after—we must leave our legacy and give them a reason to be proud. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the progress that has been made and look towards the work that lies ahead.

a2z Connect™ to help power IAEE Expo! Expo! 2019 exhibitor and attendee experience.

March 6, 2019 – Austin, Texas – Personify, Inc. (“Personify”), the market-leading provider of technology solutions for associations and nonprofit organizations, and the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) today announced an extended partnership with Personify’s a2z business and 2019 Expo! Expo! IAEE’s Annual Meeting and Exhibition.

The partnership will bring the entire suite of a2z’s event management solutions, including a2zShow™, Connect™ and the ChirpE™ mobile app to next year’s Expo! Expo! event on 3-5 December in Las Vegas, Nevada. The one echo system enables all IAEE show data to flow seamlessly between all touch points within their solution. This means no extra work to align each piece of event technology and a consistent public experience across the platforms. By coupling the ChirpE mobile app and a2zShow solutions with Connect, attendees and exhibitors will find the same streamlined experience in all facets of Expo! Expo!. Whether attendees are viewing the floor plan from their mobile app or searching for their next conference session, they will remain within the same a2z ecosystem.

“a2z has partnered with IAEE since 2014 resulting in thousands of new connections among buyers, sellers and peers at Expo! Expo!,” said Roger Price, General Manager of a2z by Personify. “We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with IAEE to bring new peer-to-peer networking opportunities to this year’s event and help transform the show floor into an interactive marketplace.”

During Expo! Expo! 2018, the a2z and IAEE partnership drove increased attendee engagement through the Connect solutions platform, resulting in more than 2,000 appointment requests, 187,000 page views, 34,000 eBooth views and 2,300 attendee expo plan entries. With the addition of a2zShow and the ChirpE mobile app, IAEE is set to deliver a best-in-show solution at every step of the exhibitor and attendee journey. Building off the success of 2018, a2z and IAEE’s partnership will utilize a2z solutions to create an enhanced exhibitor and attendee experience in Las Vegas.

“a2z by Personify will provide a seamless exhibitor and attendee digital experience, which is critical to our event,” said IAEE President and CEO David DuBois, CMP, CAE, FASAE, CTA. “We are excited to once again leverage a2z Connect to help exhibitors and attendees facilitate meaningful connections on the Expo! Expo! 2019 show floor and beyond.”
